This past week has been challenging to say the least. My company Blue Sky Fitness and Health Coaching has operated the Urban Wellness Centre in downtown Winnipeg for the past 8 years. The building owners have chosen to close us down effective December 31st as we aren’t bringing in enough revenue to cover the costs of operating a facility in a commercial retail space of 7,000 square feet. Definitely a hard pill to swallow as this place has become my second home.
My over 400 members have become friends… a tight knit community where we celebrate successes, work hard and motivate each other to be better than we were yesterday.
Last week I gave myself permission to be sad. To cry when I needed to and surround myself with my family and friends and my tribe of amazing members who reached out to me in shock and sadness upon hearing the news.
Yesterday I dropped my daughter off at her volleyball practice and had some old clothing to donate to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Instead of driving to my usual drop off location 20 minutes away I spotted a drop box in the parking lot across the street from her practice. I drove and tossed my two big garbage bags of clothing in and instead of exiting left and going my usual route home down a main street, something told me to turn right.
I drove down this side street and about half way down this large red-headed woodpecker literally swooped down in front of my car and flew directly in front of me for the length of 3-4 houses. It then swerved left and landed in a tree. I was stunned at this as this was the first time anything like this had happened to me. I could count on one hand how many times I’ve even “seen” a woodpecker in the last 4 decades plus of my life! I stopped, backed up and took this picture and immediately googled the symbolic meaning of seeing a woodpecker.
Here is what I learned:
A woodpecker represents OPPORTUNITY. As in “when opportunity knocks, answer the door”.
If Woodpecker has come knocking…
Woodpecker is letting you know that it is time to really pay attention because opportunity has come knocking along with it. It is signaling you that great changes are happening in your life and it is up to you to seize the moment.

I breathed a sigh of relief. My intuition said “Everything is going to be okay.” If you are unsure of next steps in your own life I encourage you to watch for signs that are there to guide you in the right direction. Stay positive and open, watch and listen. The signs are there for all of us at the right times we need them to be.
