Have you ever wondered what your body is actually made up of? It’s actually pretty important stuff to be aware of!
Without getting super “ uber” technical with fancy names of every tendon or bone ( 206 bones by the way…) in the human body let’s do a crash course on what the main areas that make up our body composition are as it relates to your health.
When people talk about getting healthier, they often refer to losing weight as reducing numbers on the scale. But is this number on the scale telling us the whole story?
The answer is a definite NO.
The number on the scale tell us our general weight. It does not differentiate how much of that weight is made up of our Lean Mass which is composed of our muscle tissues and bones. It also doesn’t tell us whether or not we have a healthy percentage of Body Fat so we aren’t at risk for obesity or many other chronic diseases and health conditions. There are two types of body fat in our bodies that we want to be aware of:
- Subcutaneous Fat
- Visceral Fat
The first type of fat is called Subcutaneous. This is the fat that is located directly underneath our skin…essentially the fat we can grab onto!
The second type of fat is Visceral Fat and this is the dangerous fat that is hidden in and around our organs which can impede their ability to function properly and cause a much greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart attack and stroke.[1] It is highly recommended that this type of fat remains under 2lbs, preferably 1lbs.
The gold standard in body composition is having a Dexa Scan. This type of scan is the most accurate and precise measuring your exact amount of visceral fat (dangerous fat) so you are aware of your health risk and take necessary steps to reduce it. It will also let you know your overall body fat percentage as well as your lean muscle mass and compare to norms in your age range. Another bonus of having this scan is it will measure your bone density to let you know if you may be at risk for osteroporosis.
